ABSTRACT

Difficulties and barriers to including people with disabilities (PwDs) in organizations drives research development. This study sought to understand how organizational psychologists perceived the inclusion of PwDs in organizations. Eighteen organizational psychologists who work in people management for companies in the seven regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul participated in an individual interview. Most interviewees were female, with average age of 33.17 years, had a postgraduate degree in the field, and worked in companies from different segments. During the interviews, the psychologists called attention to the little or nonexistent content on human disability and, specifically, inclusion in the labor market covered in the graduate course. This gap has been reported by graduates from different higher education institutions since the 1990s. According to the respondents, attitudinal and organizational barriers are often faced in the inclusion process, such as the unpreparedness of companies, managers, and employees to welcome PwD, the few programs aimed at an effective inclusion and not only to comply with the law, as well as the difficulties of the professionals themselves to identify the potentials and limitations that PwD present and to adapt them correctly to the work. Organizational psychologists can contribute to an adequate inclusion process by developing training and sensibilization activities that foster information and reduce discrimination and difficulties.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The shortage of dental hygienists has been a long-standing problem in Korea. Small-scaled dental clinics suffer from a lack of dental hygienists, who seem to prefer working at large-scaled dental clinics. The purpose of this study was to confirm the differences in the working conditions according to the scales of dental clinics. We collected the working information registered via job advertisements through the web-sites of Korean Dental Hygienists Association, Dental Jobs, and Nurse Jobs from July to August 2016. The results were as follows: 96.7% of the advertisements wanted regular workers, while the proportion of part-time workers was the highest (34.8%) in the group with less than 3 employees. The average workdays per week was 5.32±0.55 days, and the group with less than 3 employees had significantly longer workdays than the other groups. The daily working time was 8.99±0.44 hours, and there was no difference among the groups. Night overtime hours were needed by 54.4%, 45.0%, and 31.3% of the groups with of the groups with 4~7 employees, more than 8 employees, and less than 3 employees, respectively. Information regarding annual leave (60.5%), monthly leave (63.9%), half a day off (32.4%) and vacations (43.1%) were presented in the job advertisements, and these proportions were significantly higher by the group with more than 8 employees. Information on overtime pay (14.4%), night-work pay (13.4%), incentives (34.1%), lunches (60.2%), vacation bonuses (33.8%), and self-development (20.4%) were presented in job advertisements. The group with 4~7 employees had significantly higher proportions in severance pay, vacation bonuses, self-development, and major national insurance. It is necessary to consider the improvement of working conditions, diversity of working styles, and welfare of dental hygienists, and it is suggested that small dental clinics provide more precise working conditions.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the choice experiences of students majoring in nursing and whose mothers were nurses. METHODS: The participants of this study were 12 students, six male and six female. Data were collected via an in-depth personal interview. The collected data were analyzed with Colazzi's phenomenological methodology. RESULTS: A core theme of ‘Natural choice as my major’ emerged. In addition, we found the following three theme clusters: 1. My choice; 2. Expanding relationship between Mother and I; 3. Journey with mother. CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that the mothers of nursing students who were nurses themselves were good role models. They could influence their children to choose nursing as a profession. Also, they affected or are affecting their children to be colleagues in the same way. If we could provide good working environments for nurses, the next generation will also choose nursing as a profession and ultimately establish a family line. An educational setting is required to provide better professional nursing conditions for the next generation.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examine the beliefs of self-efficacy in the transition to work, identifying possible differences in gender, age and course. The subjects in the study were 100 senior college undergraduates of both sexes (86 percent male and 14 percent female), age range from 21-47 years (M = 26.01, SD = 4.72), from four different engineering courses: civil, electrical, mechanical and computational, from a private university in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The instrument applied collectively was the Escala de Autoeficácia na Transição para o Trabalho "Self-Efficacy Scale in Transition to Work" (SESTW-Br). Results indicated no significant differences to exist in relation to sex and age; however, differences were found among the courses in respect to self-efficacy when looking for a job. It is suggested that further studies are done with more heterogeneous samples so that other variables can be explored.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The current study was aimed to investigate the transformational experience of a female student nurse living with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: A case study of a 24-year-old diabetes patient was conducted, with interviews concerning the evolving process she had lived through during the period from her later high school years to her graduation from nursing college. RESULTS: Followings were identified as 5-transformation process: With her diabetes-related limitation, the participant experienced 'conflict involving choosing a college and major'. The participant tried to be in charge of managing her diabetes and stepped forward to 'adaptation to college life as a new environment', and she learned more about the process of 'evolving awareness of caring' and developed herself further through the process of 'integration of the nurse identity into self-identity', and finally through the process of 'progression and preparation for getting a job' she achieved her goals, being positive about the future. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study can provide individuals with diabetes a way of self-management and help the patients and their families in diabetes education. Further research will be needed to refine the results of this study and to learn more about the experiences of patients with type I diabetes in college years.
